Leviathan

Raid Boss

Leviathan is the serpentine Raid Boss of the Third Sea, fought on the open sea in the Frozen Dimension. It's the largest enemy in the game with 1,000,000 HP total: it has four segments including the main body, and that main body takes no damage until all segments are destroyed. It drops Leviathan Scales, the Serpent Slayer title, and especially the Leviathan Heart, the centerpiece of Sanguine Art, Mythical Scroll, and Draco V4.

How to get it

Leviathan is summoned via the Frozen Watcher, which opens the Frozen Dimension. A second possible but not recommended method: fish for a Levi with the Curse of the Leviathan enchantment on your rod, which leaves you alone against the boss and still requires you to have a Beast Hunter nearby for the heart. In practice, the boss doesn't appear in the Frozen Dimension itself: it spawns behind the Great Tree at Sea Danger Level 4 and teleports the entire Sea Exploration Group to it. Two Leviathans cannot coexist, nor can the Frozen Dimension.

What it drops

All drops are guaranteed as long as you've dealt at least 8% of damage to each segment. Below that, you leave empty-handed from both the boss and its segments. Each segment drops 3 to 5 Leviathan Scales drawn at random, for roughly 12 to 20 Scales total depending on how many segments you destroyed and your participation.

Per segment destroyed:

  • Roughly 50,000 Beli
  • 3 to 5 Leviathan Scales
  • 1 level
  • 62,500 Bounty or Honor, if your Bounty or Honor is under 2.5M

On the Leviathan itself:

  • Roughly 250,000 Beli
  • 3 to 5 Leviathan Scales
  • 1,000 Fragments
  • 5 levels
  • 2,200 Valor
  • The Serpent Slayer title
  • The Leviathan Heart, provided you harpoon it with the Beast Hunter and bring it back to Tiki Outpost

How it behaves

The main body stays invulnerable as long as the segments hold: always start with them.

Leviathan ignores M1, with a few exceptions: Dragon, Kitsune, Gas, Yeti, Tiger, Mammoth, Awakened Dough, Awakened Phoenix, Gravity, and Explosive Guns. It also ignores single-target attacks, except Magma's [X].

Two traps to know: if you join the fight after the cutscene triggers, you can no longer deal any damage to it. And once all segments are destroyed, lightning appears, with an effect similar to Rough Sea that significantly complicates the end of the fight.

Its attacks

AttackWhat it doesHow to avoid it
Snowstorm of DeathCreates 2 to 3 thin and tall tornadoes that deal low damage but stun. They don't work in the air and last roughly 7 seconds; the range is short but the stun is very annoying, most damage coming from falling into the water.Flying or a movement ability is enough to slip between the tornadoes.
Cold FrostpiercerIt roars over a wide area and sends ice lances toward nearby players: freezing, stun, and knockback on impact. Mainly hurts by pushing you into the water, and can break Instinct.Don't stay near its head. When it roars, watch if the lances are coming toward you and get away.
Sub-Zero AnnihilationA red zone appears roughly 5 seconds before the move, then it sweeps its tail, launching ice and sending players far away.Leave the red zone immediately: the move is deadly and strips the ground from under your feet. Camping in the air above the zone doesn't protect you. The ice surface it creates does let you recover your Air Jump, though.
Frostbite DiveIt dives and emerges elsewhere, often near a player. It completely disappears underwater for several seconds, invisible and untouchable. It deals no damage by itself, but get away after the dive: it can reappear on you and chain into another attack.

Getting the Leviathan Heart

This is the part most groups mess up.

  • The heart only appears if you hunted Leviathan with the Beast Hunter boat. This boat isn't needed to spawn the Frozen Dimension, but without it, no heart at all.
  • Once the boss is dead, the heart has only one minute of lifespan: the source recommends sending someone to get the Beast Hunter as soon as the main body drops to around 10-15% health.
  • Harpoon the heart with the Beast Hunter's harpoon, then bring it back to Tiki Outpost to receive it in your inventory.
  • If you die before or after Leviathan's death, you won't get the heart, even if you come back to the boat later (the quest may reappear, but the item won't be given).
  • You can leave the boat as long as you don't die, provided you catch up to it and get the quest back before delivery to Tiki Outpost.
  • Variant: delivered to Hydra Island's waterfall, the heart freezes the island (Freezing Hydra Island, useful for Draco V4), but you don't keep it.

Tips for the expedition

  • Come with 5 or more players: that's the threshold the source gives for a good success rate.
  • Shark and the Leviathan Shield are recommended because of water damage that fruit users take. If you wear the Leviathan Shield, the best races are Cyborg, Human, and Draco: Ghoul and Angel cause annoying visual effects for other players.
  • Without Beast Hunter, take a durable boat (Lantern, Guardian) rather than a fast boat like The Sentinel or Miracle. But for the Leviathan Heart, Beast Hunter is still mandatory.
  • Keep one player as Shipwright to repair the boat and prevent it from being destroyed.
  • Don't repair your boat fully before summoning the boss: bring it to 2,000 health max, it'll go back to max during the fight, which Leviathan can't damage anyway.
  • If your damage on segments plateaus, deal at least 18,750 damage to one segment then switch targets: you maximize Leviathan Scales without exhausting yourself on one segment.
  • Recommended Sea Exploration Group composition: Lightning (with upgraded [X]), Yeti, Awakened Buddha, and Awakened Magma, with Mammoth and Blizzard as solid alternatives. The best fruits remain Dragon and Magma, whose every attack hits the boss, including Dragon's M1.
  • For fighting styles: Sharkman Karate, Death Step, Dragon Talon, and Sanguine Art for their AoE and range, with Sanguine Art and Sharkman Karate leading.
  • With Buddha, equip Retribution Dash and Buddha Leap for mobility, or go fruit stats with upgraded [C] and spam AoE. In that case, Saber V2 or Shark Anchor are advised.
  • If you have your combat fruit permanently and Light permanently, switch to Light to catch up to your group when you get lost.
  • The pilot benefits from wearing Kitsune Mask to avoid rocks at Sea Danger Level 6.
  • A group hunting Leviathan attracts bounty hunters: wait in the Safe Zone at Tiki Outpost before leaving, have a member wear Pale Scarf to watch for pursuers, and avoid hugging islands on the way back.
  • Transport trick mentioned by the source: with a transformed Dragon in Western variant and the saddle equipped, a player sitting on the boat seat while clicking the saddle can stick the boat onto the Dragon and make it fly, which avoids Sea Events like Terrorshark. You need to keep someone at the helm, otherwise the boat can vanish.

Known bugs and quirks

  • Sometimes the last segment simply doesn't appear.
  • Sometimes Leviathan takes no damage after the segments are destroyed but still demands they be destroyed.
  • Sometimes all segments except the main body disappear.
  • Tiger's old [X] could send a segment out of the red combat zone.
  • Leviathan's tail can knock your boat out of the red zone.
  • Beast Hunter can randomly vanish during the fight.
  • After bribing the Spy, Leviathan sometimes disappears, forcing you to pay 6,000 Fragments again.
  • The boat can no longer be repaired once it's been used to kill Leviathan.
  • Leviathan fills the Race Awakening bar slower than Sea Beasts.
  • Contrary to what people often read, the Spy's cooldown is individual and doesn't affect the boss's spawn chances.
  • If you summoned it, you'll need to defeat more than 20 Sea Events (Piranhas and Sharks count) before you can bribe the Spy again.

Lore

The Spy describes Leviathan as a creature born from primordial essence during a period of perpetual winter. It supposedly grew hidden in the deep while the planet crossed the 10,000-year Solstice that ended that global winter, gradually developing its ice powers through contact with other abyssal organisms. The Red King's appearance supposedly brought it up, acting under its influence to refreeze the oceans.

To know

  • It's the first enemy in the game to have its own appearance cutscene.
  • It's also the largest Raid Boss and largest enemy in the game.
  • Its name is also that of the title earned by unlocking Shark V4, hence some confusion.
  • Players shorten it to "Levi," which can be confused with the Levi fish, which looks very similar to it.
  • In version 21.3 of Update 20, the head and tail dropped nothing; fixed in version 22.0, during the Ghost Event.
  • Health history: 887,500 HP at release, then 1,012,500, then the current 1,000,000. Note that the source contradicts itself on segments: the infobox announces 187,500 HP per segment (and 200,000 for the head and tail), while the trivia section claims they went from 187,500 to 350,000.

Our take

The most demanding sea battle of the Third Sea: long, punishing, and merciless with improvised groups. Prepare the Beast Hunter before even summoning it, aim for 8% damage on each segment to secure your Scales, and go with a minimum of 5. The Leviathan Heart unlocks Sanguine Art, Mythical Scroll, and Draco V4: it's well worth the expedition.
