Instinct (formerly Observation) is the "sixth sense" of
Blox Fruits: it lets you automatically dodge certain attacks and see entities through solid surfaces. Beware, some moves can break it (Instinct Break) and disable it temporarily.
How to get it
Learned from the
Instinct Teacher at
Upper Skylands for 750,000 Beli. Two other conditions: be level 300 or higher and complete the Saber Puzzle. If he tells you "I am the strongest pirate to ever live. I will not have any weaklings in my crew", it means you lack level 300 or the Saber Puzzle. To activate or deactivate it: press [E] on PC, D-Pad left on controller, eye button on mobile.
What you see with Instinct
Once activated, Instinct highlights all game entities in 3 colors:
| Color | Entities |
|---|---|
| Red | |
| White | Non-allied players |
| Green | Allied players |
You can even see an enemy's health and energy before they appear, and detect NPCs not yet spawned if your vision range is sufficient. Other players are always detected from farther away than NPCs (intentional, to reduce lag).
Dodges
Active Instinct gives you automatic dodges:
- 2 dodges at Instinct level 1, +1 per level, up to 8 at level 7 (max).
- Each dodge takes about 50 seconds to recharge.
- A normal enemy hit only consumes 0.5 charge; a boss or player hit consumes 1 full charge.
Leveling up Instinct
You gain 1 EXP per dodged attack while Instinct is active. To check your current EXP, talk to the Instinct Teacher at Upper Skylands. The thresholds below are community estimates:
| Level | EXP | Dodges |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 to 59 | 2 |
| 2 | 60 to 329 | 3 |
| 3 | 330 to 815 | 4 |
| 4 | 816 to 1,416 | 5 |
| 5 | 1,417 to 2,099 | 6 |
| 6 | 2,100 to 2,823 | 7 |
| 7 (MAX) | 2,824 to 5,000 | 8 |
At max level, you receive the "Ultra Instinct" title (#072).
Instinct V2
Instinct upgrades to Instinct V2 once you've accumulated 5,000 EXP on normal Instinct and completed the
Citizen quest (
Hungry Man Quest). The maximum number of dodges is reached at 2,824 EXP, but keep pushing to 5,000: you get maximum vision range and access to the quest to unlock V2.
Farming tips
- Best farming: farm
Shandas by server hopping. You spawn right next to their area, and the Instinct Teacher is nearby to check your level. There's no cooldown when you switch servers: hop as soon as your charges are empty. - For AFK, prefer weak enemies like
Bandits (plus you're in a safe zone, impossible to get killed) or
Monkeys, thanks to their low damage. - With an
Elemental fruit, your Elemental Reflex takes hits for you: choose an enemy with
Aura or a boss, otherwise no dodges trigger. - Equip an accessory that gives extra charges (
Pale Scarf,
Holiday Cloak...): these bonus dodges also count toward leveling EXP. - Reminder: normal enemies only consume 0.5 charge per hit while giving 1 full EXP - that's the best ratio for grinding.
Bonus dodges
You can exceed the 8 base dodges with
Human V2 race or certain accessories:
| Source | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Pale Scarf | +2 dodges |
| +2 dodges | |
| +1 dodge | |
| Holiday Cloak | +1 dodge |
| +1 dodge | |
| Human V2 | additional dodges |
The maximum possible is 11 dodges, with Pale Scarf or Kitsune Mask and Human V2. Tip: if you remove a dodge accessory after equipping it, you keep the bonus dodges until they're consumed.
Did you know?
- Some moves temporarily break Instinct (like
Spider's [X]): this is Instinct Break, heavily exploited in PvP. Some NPC attacks can also disable it. - Activating Instinct in the middle of an enemy move to avoid damage or a combo is called "Ken-Tricking" (or Instinct-Tricking). Powerful, but it takes practice.
- If you hold a move (like
Cursed Dual Katana's [X]) with Instinct active and get hit, Instinct breaks even if you have dodges left. - Instinct is forcibly disabled during raids (special abilities are disabled there), and stays that way until you die or the raid ends.
- Resetting your character with Instinct enabled disables it.
- Glitch: when joining a server, activate Instinct very quickly for the first time and it will show 8/8 dodges before reverting to your true value. It's too fast to exploit, and it doesn't work if you already have 8 dodges.
- Moves that go through walls (like
Skull Guitar's [Z]) often miss their target when you aim through an obstacle with Instinct: the object distorts the aiming depth. - Get Instinct before heading to
Second Sea: it quickly becomes essential for the rest of the game, and you accumulate EXP as you progress.
