Materials are components dropped by enemies, each with their own uses. They serve to craft weapons, unlock fighting styles like
Godhuman, evolve your race, or upgrade your equipment. The game has 55 in total, ranging from
Common to
Mythical, and they arrived with Update 17.3. Almost all have at least one use: the only one that serves no purpose today is
Gunpowder.
How to get it
They drop from enemies in all three seas. Drop rates are low, but the number of
NPCs you defeat while farming more than makes up for it: it's quantity that builds your stock. Some Materials also come from
Sea Events in the
Third Sea, and the
Leviathan Crown increases their drop chance.
What they're used for
- Craft weapons
- Unlock
Fighting Styles, like Godhuman - Evolve your race
- Upgrade your weapons via
Upgrading - Craft special items, like the
Skull Guitar

Storage capacity
Most Materials cap at 99 stacks. Here are all the exceptions listed by the source:

The logic behind these numbers: most of these items serve as currency rather than crafting ingredients, hence the huge volumes. Conversely, Monster Magnet and Volcanic Magnet are treated as simple items, which explains their ridiculously low cap of 1.
Farming efficiently
- Farm in the
First Sea: enemies there are weaker, so you can defeat them much faster.
Quake is highly recommended, especially in First Sea: its [V] move sweeps and defeats a large number of enemies at once.
Dragon (West or East) also works great: all its moves have massive area of effect, to the point of being able to cover an entire island.- Wear the Leviathan Crown in the Third Sea: it increases the drop rate of Materials from Sea Events.
Good to know
- Materials cannot be equipped: they stay in your inventory, period.
- Gunpowder is the only Material with no current use. It did serve a purpose once, to craft Halloween potions in limited edition.
- Some Materials, like Ectoplasm, can be exchanged directly as currency for items or weapons.
- The source announces 55 Materials and provides the breakdown by rarity (15, 11, 10, 10, and 9), a count that checks out perfectly.
