Combat

Fighting Style

Combat is the very first fighting style in the game: you get it automatically when you arrive, without asking for anything. Only two abilities, slow M1, very short range and weak damage - it's the worst style in the First Sea, both for farming and for PvP. Yet it has a special status: once traded for another style, it can only be recovered from the Fruit Remover, once the island secrets are complete, which paradoxically makes it one of the rarest styles in the game. Since Update 30, it also has an upgraded version, Advanced Combat, unlocked through a puzzle once every island secret is complete.

How to get it

Combat is given for free and automatically from your first login (First Sea). No NPC teaches it, no Mastery is required, there's nothing to pay.

But be careful: once replaced by another fighting style, no teacher gives it back and there is no quest to recover it. Since Update 30, the source page lists a single way out: the First Sea Fruit Remover can teach it again after removing your fruit, provided you have completed every island secret, listened to the Secrets Master's stories (the "Tell me some stories" option) and visited the islands he names with the Middle Town teleporter (condition added to the Combat page on 18 September 2026, which the Remove Blox Fruit page already carried). Since 16 September 2026 the page states that it only works at the Prison: at Castle on the Sea (Third Sea), the same NPC answers "Not here, not now." Its infobox nevertheless still lists Castle on the Sea as an obtainment location, a contradiction within the page itself. The level 2995 requirement the source used to show was added on 12 September 2026 then removed on the 15th, its author calling it a rumour: do not count on it, the details are on the Remove Blox Fruit page. Only buy a style again when you really have the means to pay for it.

Moveset

KeyMovePreviewDescription
M1 Normal Punches You chain four punches: right hook, left hook, uppercut, then a straight punch. Very short range, slow cadence (only Dark Step's M1 is slower) and weak damage - it's the bare minimum to survive your first levels. Most enemies in the game actually use exactly these M1.
Z Quick Tackle
Mas. 1
You rush forward and hit everything in your path, throwing targets quite far and leaving an air vortex behind you. The move uses less energy than a normal dash while going much further: at low level, it's a real way to save your bar. Drawbacks: terrible range, impossible to aim up or down, and it doesn't break Instinct. It also doesn't touch ground-based targets when you're transformed into Buddha.
cooldown 7.5s · energy 15
X Ground Smash
Mas. 20
You smash the ground with your foot: a medium shockwave pushes everything around you, cracks the ground and throws terrain chunks in the air. It slightly stuns and especially breaks Instinct, but the AoE is small and the range short. Used in the air, the hitbox extends a bit lower than the ground version and can hit someone just below you. Transformed into Buddha, however, it no longer touches normal-sized targets on the ground.

Instinct: what passes and what doesn't

AbilityBreaks InstinctAvoidable with InstinctDetail
[Z] Quick TackleNoYesDoesn't break Instinct in any way
[X] Ground SmashYesYesCan be avoided on the edge of the area

It's the only real play card for Combat in a duel: your [X] forces your opponent to react, your [Z] doesn't.

Cooldown and energy

Since 1 October 2026 the source page shows each ability's cooldown and energy cost, where it used to give two unlabelled numbers.

AbilityMasteryCooldownEnergy
[Z] Quick Tackle17.5 s15
[X] Ground Smash2012 s25

Both values are also repeated under each ability's description, above.

The Buddha trap

Under the Buddha transformation, awakened or not, your hitbox is lifted off the ground. Result: [Z] Quick Tackle no longer touches NPCs or normal-sized players on the ground, because the move doesn't aim vertically. And [X] Ground Smash has a hitbox too small to catch up.

Combat's [X] Ground Smash, the ability that breaks Instinct.
Combat's [Z] Quick Tackle, useless against an opponent transformed into Buddha.

Concretely, transformed into Buddha with Combat, you're left with just M1.

Advanced Combat, the upgraded version

Update 30 added Advanced Combat, also called Combat V2: a Meteor Tackle that builds on Quick Tackle but can be aimed in any direction, an Instinct-breaking Ground Breaker, a chargeable Charged Punch. Its obtainment, long presented as staff only, has been published since 14 September 2026: complete every First Sea island secret, listen to the Secrets Master's three rumors, visit the named islands with the Middle Town teleporter, then kill every awakened boss with Combat only. That is where Combat becomes useful again: if you replaced it, the Prison's Remove Blox Fruit gives it back for 50,000 Beli once your fruit is removed. Details are on the Advanced Combat page.

Did you know

  • Combat is the only fighting style with only two abilities: all the others have three or four.
  • It's also the hardest to relearn: you need to complete the island secrets and go through the Fruit Remover. Some players even consider it the rarest item in the game.
  • Its M1 is the second slowest in the game, just behind Dark Step's.
  • Its idle stance is the most realistic of all fighting styles: it looks like a real boxing guard.
  • Its moves are reminiscent of Superhuman's and Godhuman's [C] and [X], to the point that some players saw Superhuman as a "Combat V2" and Godhuman as its V3. Since Update 30, the real Combat V2 exists: it's Advanced Combat.
  • Most enemies in the game use Combat's M1, and Raiders also use its [Z] Quick Tackle.
  • As for the icon, the source contradicts itself: its text states that Combat went about 5 years without an icon before receiving one at Update 29, while its own history mentions an icon remade at that Update 29 and shows the old one. Just remember that the current icon dates from Update 29.
Combat's old icon, replaced in Update 29.
  • When Player Profiles arrived, a statistic counted mastered fighting styles out of 12, Combat included: players who had changed their style before mastering it could never reach 12/12. The counter has since been corrected and moved to 11.

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Free and available from the moment you arrive in the game
  • Easy to use, immediate learning curve
  • Low end-lag and slight knockback to keep your distance
  • Both abilities can hit Sea Beasts, surprisingly for a starter style
  • [Z] Quick Tackle: quick start, more distance than a dash for less energy, decent for extending combos
  • [X] Ground Smash: breaks Instinct, decent knockback to regain distance, decent AoE, very short startup and endlag
  • Very weak damage, quickly outdated
  • Only two abilities, versus three or four elsewhere
  • Very short range and slow M1
  • Vulnerable to teaming: against several opponents at once, it has nothing to answer with
  • Transformed into Buddha, neither ability hits normal-sized targets on the ground: only M1 lands
  • [Z] Quick Tackle: terrible range, impossible to aim up or down, doesn't break Instinct
  • [X] Ground Smash: small AoE
  • Almost impossible to relearn once replaced: every island secret to complete, then 50,000 Beli at Remove Blox Fruit in the Prison

Our take

PvE2/10
PvP1/10

Keep it just long enough to save up the 150,000 Beli for Dark Step. No reason to keep it beyond your first levels.

Update history

Fighting Style : Combat·Released : Update 1

  1. Update 30 1er octobre 2026 Adjustment
    • The Combat page now shows each ability's cooldown and energy (Quick Tackle 7.5 s and 15, Ground Smash 12 s and 25): this entry repeats them under each ability and in a table, instead of the two unlabelled numbers.
    • Pros and cons aligned with the page: both abilities can hit Sea Beasts, the [Z]'s range is called terrible, Combat is vulnerable to teaming and neither ability hits anything on the ground under Buddha's transformation.
    • The page no longer calls Combat the most realistic style, only its idle stance.
