Flash Step

Mechanic

« Your steps feel weightless... » Flash Step teleports you at medium range for 10 energy, with a 15 second cooldown. It's the survival move of the game - dodge an attack, escape a combo, or conversely stick to an opponent to chain attacks. You trigger it with [R] on PC, with the "Flash Step" button then a tap on the destination on mobile, or by pressing the right joystick on controller. It's been in the game since Update 1 and remains, according to the source, one of the most important abilities in PvP, if only to get back to the ground when someone sends you into the air.

How to get it

Buy it for 100,000 Beli from the Ability Teacher, who can be found on two islands in the First Sea: Frozen Village (in the hidden cave) and Magma Village.

It only affects players, and once bought it's permanently yours.

How It Works

  • Cost: 10 energy. Range: medium and limited. Cooldown: 15 seconds.
Flash Step in action, the short range teleport ability.
  • You can only teleport onto a surface, never in mid-air, except with the V4 transformation of Angel.
  • Other players count as surfaces - with some skill, you can teleport onto someone mid-flight. However, Sea Beasts and the Leviathan don't count.
  • You can climb along walls and vertical cliffs, as long as they're not too high.
  • Impossible to use in the water. Tip: jump out of the water, and you regain use of the move for the duration of the jump.
  • Teleporting into the water is still possible, but costs a lot of Health if you're carrying a Blox Fruit, except in Shark race or with the Leviathan Shield equipped.
  • Fun exception: an Awakened Buddha can use Flash Step in the water, because it's too large to swim and walks on the sea floor. If it gets ragdolled or pushed into the water, its avatar can still start swimming, but that's rare - the awakened form usually gets back up.
  • Useful note: the dashes of players who own Flash Step have a blue shine.

Possible Buffs

SourceEffect on Flash Step
Human V2Doubles the range and reduces cooldown from 15 to 10 seconds
Human V4 (Psycho gear)Gives two additional Flash Steps - you chain three together in charge form, like Lightning's [F]
Kitsune Ribbon-25% cooldown
Draco V2Makes an explosion appear on each use. The Fandom Draco page describes it as purely visual at this stage
Draco V3The explosion deals damage and applies a burn: 108% of your level in total (brought down from 120% in Update 25)
GravityDeals damage in the teleportation departure zone
Yeti (Transformed)Leaves a clone behind that slightly damages on contact, like Gravity, but lasts longer
ControlSpawns a pillar that damages at your arrival point, and can also push you as it forms (when the [Z] move is active)

> Sources disagree: the Fandom Flash Step page credits the damaging explosion to V2, while the Draco page reserves the damage and the burn for V3. Only the Draco page gives a figure, so that is the one we follow here.

Tips and Glitches

  • Offensive: teleport right next to your opponent and chain a high DPS short-range move. Energy Core pairs very well with this approach.
  • Defensive: it's the number one tool for escaping a combo, or getting back to the ground when an opponent below sent you into the air.
  • It also enables the Wall Glitch, notably for entering Wenlocktoad's room at the Café in the Second Sea.

Good to Know

  • Flash Step is an ability, not a fruit move - it doesn't depend on any Blox Fruit and only affects players.
The Ability Teacher, the NPC who teaches Flash Step.
  • Don't confuse it with Teleportation, which is a different system.
  • The move has existed since Update 1 and changed appearance over time - the source keeps an image of the old version.
