Chess

Mechanic

Chess is a 1v1 chess minigame hidden in Blox Fruits, on two boards: one beneath the Café in the Second Sea, one at the Mansion in the Third Sea. You need two players to start a game, otherwise the pieces remain locked. And above all, the house rules deviate from real chess on massive points, enough to trap even a good player.

How to get it

Head to one of the two tables: in the basement of the Café (Second Sea) or at the Mansion (Third Sea). You need a human opponent for the pieces to become movable.

House rules, different from real chess

  • The goal is to capture the king, not to checkmate it. Concretely, check is never announced: if you leave your king undefended without noticing, it gets captured and you lose the game.

  • Stalemate does not exist, nor anything equivalent.
  • En passant capture is impossible in the minigame.
  • The Queen jumps over pieces, exactly like a Knight. This is the most brutal quirk: you can win a game by jumping over the entire enemy defense to capture the king directly.
  • Castling exists: you execute it by using the Rook on the King. Since you start with two Rooks, the other remains available to castle on the other side.

The two titles to unlock

  • "The Mastermind": beat an opponent.
  • "The Mad King": successfully castle.

Playing well: Fandom tips

  • King safety comes before everything else: losing it means losing the game.
  • At the opening, control the center with your pawns, your Knights and your Bishops.
  • Keep the Queen and Rooks for later: brought out too early, they get harassed.
  • Don't push pawns in front of your king once castled, you expose it. Exception: in Rook or Queen endgames, where back rank mate becomes a real threat.
  • Learn to trap the enemy king with few pieces, that's what wins endgames.
  • Use pinning: a pinned piece cannot move without losing a higher-value piece behind it.
  • Never exchange a piece without reason. Always ask yourself "who wins after the exchange?".
  • Working on a few openings and their variations avoids losing foolishly from the opening moves.
  • Master the basic endgames: mate with a Queen or a Rook, mate with two Bishops and the king, or simply advance a pawn to promotion with the king.
  • Since most Blox Fruits players don't know much about chess, Scholar's Mate remains a very effective quick victory.

Knight and Bishop are worth the same on paper, but the Knight is better in closed positions and the Bishop in open positions. It also sometimes happens that a sacrifice is profitable, to checkmate or to win material with a fork.

On mobile and on console

  • On mobile, the game is more awkward to control. Disable shift lock, it becomes much more playable.
  • On Xbox, it's simply impossible, except by managing to zoom the camera when you join the game.

Good to know

  • The minigame was developed by Norp.
  • The base of the chess table bears the inscription "Chad is the king of Blox Fruits", the same easter egg as on the trade tables of the Second and Third Sea.
