Experienced Captain

NPC

The Experienced Captain is the Misc. NPC who handles the crossing to the Second Sea. He takes you once you're Lv. 700 or higher and have completed the Military Detective quest. He holds two posts: Middle Town in the First Sea, and the docks of Port Town in the Third Sea, which also lets you go back down from the Third Sea to the Second Sea. Since Update 30, he is also at the heart of two Middle Town secrets, Lookout Duty and Early Access.

How to get it

At Middle Town (First Sea) and at the docks of Port Town (Third Sea).

The two conditions

You need to meet both for him to accept talking to you:

  • Be Lv. 700 or higher.
  • Have completed the Military Detective quest.

As long as you're missing one, he sends you away with a simple "Keep it moving."

The connection from the Third Sea is convenient: it lets you go back when you need to return to the Second Sea.

Error messages and what they mean

MessageCause
Keep it moving. You're missing the level or the Military Detective quest.
Sorry, something came up. Can't do that right now.An issue other than the level or requirements, typically a game error, prevents the crossing.

One last thing that often blocks you: you can't travel while in combat. Wait for your combat state to end before talking to him again.

His role in the island secrets (Update 30)

Since Update 30, the captain is no longer just the Second Sea ferryman: two of Middle Town's three secrets go through him.

Lookout Duty. Talk to him and pick the "Keep lookout" option, the second one in the dialogue. Two outcomes: either he tells you to come back later, or a memory mini-game starts. Ships sail past: watch their sails, how many and which color. At the end of each of the 4 waves, he asks a question about that wave: the total number of sails, or their color. You need 4 correct answers out of 4 to complete the secret. The Middle Town page calls this mini-game "Count The Flags" and says that if you fail, you can redo it.

Early Access. The secret starts right next to him: break the window above the broken cart and go inside the house. After a while, the developer Janus comes out of his room: he takes longer to spawn than the other secrets' triggers and only stays 30 minutes, so keep watch. Talk to him, then go to the Robotmega building and grab the key next to the Aura Editor. Go around the back of the same building and unlock the door: a cutscene shows your character hacking into a computer to steal a special system. Go back to Janus, he gives you the tester role.

X Marks the Spot. According to the Middle Town page, the island's third secret (a treasure map to piece together by hitting trees, barrels, lamps or boxes with M1s, then skeletons to defeat over the treasure) also ends by talking to him. The Fandom's Island Secrets page does not mention this step: to be confirmed.

Each secret grants 5 secret levels. If you only get 2, keep talking to him without leaving the game: it is a known bug. Middle Town is the only island whose secrets do not unlock a teleporter destination (the teleporter itself is inside its central building).

The full step-by-step walkthrough is on the Island Secrets page.
